What an attachment style is
Attachment is about how we look for safety in the people we are close to. The idea comes from the psychologist John Bowlby’s work on young children and their parents, and researchers have since shown that similar patterns run through adult life — in love, in friendship and in how we accept support.
Research on adult attachment usually measures two things. Anxiety: how much you worry about being rejected or left. Avoidance: how uncomfortable you are with closeness and with leaning on someone. The style is the combination of the two — secure when both are low, anxious when anxiety is high, avoidant when avoidance is high, and fearful-avoidant when both are high.
A style is not a box and not a verdict. It describes how you tend to react, and it can change with new experiences and close relationships that feel safe. The test is an aid to reflection, not a diagnosis.
